Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel and much like his The Social Network character, I am going to share unpopular thoughts over the internet.
I love Jesse Eisenberg. Funny guy, great in Zombieland, one of the best parts of The Social Network, he fit his role in the recent Now You See Me fairly well. I wasn’t a huge fan of the movies Adventureland or 30 Minutes or Less but generally I really enjoy what the actor does and he is one of those actors where I just get excited seeing him in a cast list.
All that said, he has been cast as Lex Luthor in the upcoming untitled Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman with Wonder Woman and rumors of other characters as well movie and I can’t help but feel like he isn’t right for the role. The Lex I feel like I am familiar with is intelligent, confident, older and seemingly much more mature. Generally Eisenberg’s past characters have been for the most part poor college dorm guys, quiet, nerdy and with a hint of nervousness about them, generally the same type of character Michael Cera would play. This is setting aside Now You See Me where he played a slightly more cocky version of that. This coupled with the fact that he seems 10 years younger than he is is why in my head he wouldn’t be a good fit for the character of Lex Luthor.
It has been suggested he could play a young Riddler or something like that, and honestly that could work. But I honestly don’t see Columbus as Lex Luthor.
Now ever since Affleck was cast as Batman people have been pulling out the Heath Ledger card. That everyone doubted the guy from 10 Things I Hate About You and he surprised us all with an amazing Joker. Yes he did. But then people said it about Gal Gadot who some say wouldn’t fit Wonder Woman and now some people are saying it about Eisenberg playing Luthor. It is a valid point, but we can’t use the same point about all the actors cast in the one movie basically making it seem like the movie is a set of wild cards we don’t know will do very well or not.
Honestly at the moment I’m thinking they are doing an origins type deal with young Luthor and that maybe with Eisenberg cast as Luthor they might try and have some sort of story with him casting himself away from his father, Lionel, in a Smallville fashion. Done before, I know, but it’s all I can come up with taht they would be doing with this.
I can’t judge anything until the film comes out and I would love a trailer or even a teaser just so we know what to expect from the cast they have put together but until then I can’t help but wonder what the powers that be at DC are doing.
