I have reviewed the show ‘The big bang theory’ on here before. On the show, characters Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard(Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar respectively) who encapsulate everything it means to be a geek from their love of Trek and Comics to their inability to properly handle social situations between them and their attractive female friend Penny(Kaley Cuoco). Well they have had many great geek moments from speaking in klingon or listing most of the current running Spiderman comics to penny or dressing up as superheroes for Halloween.

The show has had many notable guest stars from Analeigh Tipton and Samantha Potter from America’s next top model to Charlie Sheen from the show creator’s other show ‘Two and a half men.’

But in my opinion the most notable guest stars for a geek oriented shows are those from that of geek popular culture.

In season 3 we get 2 occurrences (Continuing in season 4 with more appearances) of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ star Wil Wheaton (as himself) as a rival to Sheldon. Wil is a big figure in the geek community even after his time on TNG. He has a largely followed twitter account and blog and does Dungeons and Dragons podcasts with webcomic creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry holkins from Penny Arcade and Scott Kurtz of Player Versus Player along with Chris Perkins from ‘Wizards of the Coast’.

Following on from the theme of Trek, George Takei stars in season 4 alongside Katee Sackhoff (Who I will talk about later) in one of Howards fantasies. Takei helps Howard realise he has feelings for a girl he is dating.

If that doesn’t satisfy your need for geek you could look to the season 3 episode where Marvel comics creator Stan Lee guest stars. In this episode, as with Wheaton’s character, Stan has a negative encounter with character Sheldon Cooper. Sheldon doesn’t get to see Stan at a book signing so he goes to Stan’s house late at night and, as he says in the show, “Got Stan Lee’s autograph on this restraining order.” Sheldon has terrible luck with stars as he goes on to say “I’m going to put this next to my Leonard Nimoy Restraing order”. Interestingly enough, although we don’t see Nimoy in the show(yet?), the character Sheldon is so far in possession of not only Nimoy’s restraining order but also a tissue that the Trek star has used, or as Sheldon puts it “I have the DNA of SPOCK!?”

Now for the girls of geekdom. In season 2 you see an episode where 2 of the main characters see sci-fi actress Summer Glau (‘Firefly’, ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’) on a train and try to hit on her using the pickup line “Oh, it’s hot in here. It must be summer”.

After that in both season 3 and 4 Katee Sackhoff (‘Battlestar Galactica’) appears in a fantasy character Howard has in the bathtub. Her character usually ends up helping him with his love life.

Lastly up for mentioning is Eliza Dushku of ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Angel’. She is one of the noteable guest stars of the show who in fact does NOT play themself but an actual character for the show. She plays and FBI agent in season 4.

Now this is a great line up of geek-based guest stars and honestly it is one of the things keeping me coming back to the show. I can’t wait to see where they go with it next.
