What I like and dislike about The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory, which you can find my other posts about HERE and HERE, has started it’s 5th season on TV at the moment. I have, as a whole, enjoyed the show so far, with a mere couple of complaints.
I was recently talking to someone about the show and in part, why we like it. I was talking about the latest episode which at the end featured one Brent Spiner, after which I concluded that I enjoy the show more due to the nerd references. I believe that the show could have a number of audiences. The chick who likes romance for example could get a kick out of the Penny-leonard thing. Or the guy who likes sex jokes, that guy would get a kick out of Howard for at least the first 3 seasons.
The criteria that are ticked off for someone like me to be the audience for that show would be things like the comic book and comic book related references( such as comic book movie discussions), the frequent guest stars from sci-fi shows such as in the latest episode where we had Wil Wheaton and Brent Spiner and the general nerd/geek science, video game, comic book references. For my dad it’s relating to the way some of the characters act, where it may seem far-fetch for a person to act that way such as Sheldon, my dad actually related to that. So thats what makes the show good, for me at least.
One thing I have noticed is that shows have an expiry date. For The Office for example it when Steve left. Even maybe before that. For The Simpsons it was more than a decade ago. For TBBT, for me anyway, while I do always enjoy the show, with exceptions, after season 4 I feel that may have been the show’s expiry date. For The Office, Season 7 was better especially in writing than Season 6. I am hoping that season 5 of TBBT is better than the 4th. Only so I can keep watching it. I enjoyed TBBT from in seasons 1-3. I don’t want that liking of the show to change just yet. Lets see where it goes.
Post-Graduation
I recently graduated high school, with one exam left. Thought it might be interesting to inform on what I have been upto. I have 6 exams for the HSC to complete, 5 of which are already done. I have 3 weeks to study for my last one which is quite convenient. That last exam is Software, Design and Development which should be a good one to do well in as I intend on getting into information technology next year.
In terms of Leisure, I have been getting into bike riding which I have found to be an enjoyable way to get somewhere faster(compared to walking) and good exercise too. As usual I am still reading comic books and I figure with my free time while the younger folk are still in school(hah), aside from the various social events I have planned it would be good to watch some movies. Ones I have and haven’t seen yet for enjoyment. For example, I have seen Star Wars but I have been thinking of watching that again(great movie). I can’t think of any movies I haven’t seen which I am desperate to see but throw a title in the comments for a suggestion and weather I have seen it or not I’ll check it out. In terms of TV shows, Battlestar Galactica, which I attempted watching at one point, is still on the back burner and in the field of sit-com’s, Modern Family season 2 is on the dvd must get list as thanks to technological difficulties I haven’t seen that season yet.
I also saved up for and bought an xbox 360 which came with Gear of War 3. I have been enjoying that game and some older ones such as games from the COD series. There are a number of games I wish to get such as either the new Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom which is an updated version of it’s predecessor or a game which was recommended to me, skyrim.
Thoughts on The Office after Michael Scott.
The Office is a show I have been enjoying for a number of years now. Season 1 was okay and a good start to the show. Season two was much better, more enjoyable and introduced a number of interesting relationships in the show. Season 3 introduced two new characters, among others, Karen and Andy. I liked Rashida Jones as Karen, one of the main reasons I started watching Parks & Recreation after she left The Office. Season 4 had its moments; the promotion and and then firing of ‘The Temp’, Ryan Howard, the start of a long-awaited relationship between Jim and Pam and the introduction of Holly, who I will talk about more later. Seasons 5 and 6 also had their moments; Pam trying her dream of being an artist and when that doesn’t work out going from receptionist to sales-person. It had the marrige of Jim and Pam and eventually their new child and possibly my favourite part of season 5, the ‘Michael Scott Paper Co.’ story.
Season 7 had its moments but as usual was just Michael being Michael and various relationships stirring pots. The more awaited moment was Holly’s return. I feel like using her was a good way to both have Michael leave and end his time there. I did like the way they ended his time there although I would have preferred an actual goodbye instead of him trying to avoid the sad goodbye and leaving a day prior to when he told people he would(even though it is something I can see that character doing). Another episode I liked from his leaving was ‘Michael’s Last Dundies’. In season two, ‘The Dundies’ was a good episode(though not the best from that season) and I enjoyed the call back to that episode.
Post-Michael; After Will Ferrell’s character got sent to hospital, Dwight had an interesting run as a temporary Regional Manager for the branch, during which he almost shot Andy. The ‘Search Committee’ season finale episode which featured a few good guest stars(Ray Romano, Jim Carey and even Ricky Gervais of the UK ‘The Office’) Andy was appointed Regional Manager.
While I feel the show could have ended at season 7 and had a good end, I am watching the new episodes out of curiosity.
With what I have seen so far of season 8, a completely new character, Robert California, talked Jo Bennett out of her job as CEO of the company completely. This is something I find harder to believe than the fact that every female character has slept with at least one guy. But I mean it is a parody show after all and an american sitcom. The one part I did enjoy was the cold-open featuring character Planking, much like their Parkour segment. As for the new boss, he, like Michael Scott, is a bit of a jerk at times. Michael, however, was just socially misunderstood and doesn’t know his limits. Robert California isn’t funny and just doesn’t seem like a good guy.
So with the main character gone, I am interested to see where the show goes from here. It hasn’t disapointed me too much in the past, aside from a few things(such as the Andy/Angela storyline in season 5, though their interactions in season 4 were good) so lets see what happens.
